So whoever was putting these things up around Washington Square Park last year is also responsible for the tiny "Iraq Out Now" stickers.

War Made Easy

This anti-war documentary is narrated by Sean Penn. I can't think of anyone more annoying for the part. He was great for "Dogtown and Z-Boys" but that was non-political. Even the little bit that he was in "When The Levees Broke" was beyond irritating.

Barack Obama vs. Hillary Clinton

Rob, our west coast correspondent, took these photos on Super Tuesday in California.

This image sums up the contest: Hillary Clinton, the slick product of the well-oiled Democratic machine, is being challenged by the grass roots efforts of Barack Obama and his supporters. And then there's Ron Paul on the fringes. Now that he's dropped out of the race, he's on the sidelines.

These two posters make a good point. Obama was willing to take an unpopular stand for what he thought was right while Hillary made a safe political bet, figuring that it would be easier to talk her way out her support for the war should it fail than hava to explain why she didn't support it if it was successful.

Samantha Power, the former foreign policy advisor to Obama was right. Hillary Rodham Clinton is a monster who is stooping to anything to win the Democratic nomination.

End The War

Bringing the troops home won't end the war. It won't stop the killing either. The solution to this problem won't fit on a poster.

USSA Hillary

Calling Democrats commies seems like something that would have ended with the Cold War but here it is, this time directed at Hillary Clinton.

As the Senator from New York, Hillary hasn't done anything radically leftist. In fact she hasn't made any sudden moves that could harm her chances at presidency. She even voted for the Iraq War when it seemed politically expedient. In that way, she is very much like the leaders of the former USSR, more interested in accumulating and holding onto power than in fostering a revolution.

This micro protest is only 2.5" wide. That's not enough room to present a cogent argument or even specify where Iraq needs to get out of. Iraq, maybe? If I were Iraq, I'd want to get out of Iraq.

Here's Irony For You

There's a big difference between George W. Bush and Ehren Watada. Bush weaseled out of combat duty without defying any direct orders. Watada just said no and that's something that the military can't allow. If soldiers get to decide whether they want to go to war or not then they'll be deciding who will be storming the beach, what time the bombardment starts and who gets to drive the tank. Anyone going into the military has to know that it's not a democracy. You obey orders and if you don't like them you have to obey them anyway.

9-11 Roundup

Tomorrow is the 6th anniversary of 9-11, an event that people still feel strongly about. Here's some of the messages that have been posted around NYC.
I remember the days of "united we stand." That was before the country was divided over the Iraq war. Even the World Trade Center is still a hole in the ground because no one can agree on what to build there.

By the time I found this on a sidewalk in Long Island City, the poster looked like it had taken more of a stamping than terrorism.
For some, 9-11 marks a new era a fascism in this country brought about by the Bush administration when the threat of terrorism is merely a tool to frighten the populace into submission. You can find more stickers and posters ready for printing at www.strike911.org.
And then there are the conspiracy theorists who I wrote about earlier. The activists at NY 9/11 Truth are trying to create an NYC 9/11 ballot initiative enabling residents of NYC to vote for a new, independent investigation of 9/11. I get the feeling that even if there were an independent investigation revealing the conspiracy behind 9-11 there would still be people claiming that the independent investigation was a cover up and that there is an even deeper conspiracy behind the attacks, involving the Vatican, the Trilateral Commission, the Federal Reserve and Home Depot.

World War III

Found in Long Island City stuck to a lamp post. This sticker warns against World War III using an image from WWII.

Right now, World War III seems unlikely because the defining conflict of our day is the struggle between the western world and the Islamic world and the militants that we are up against have the good sense not to take us on toe-to-toe, tank-to-tank and plane-to-plane. They are developing different tactics that do not include the sort of large battles that we have come so associate with World War, ones like the image used in the sticker. If we decide to engage the enemy we will be faced with a situation more like a string of Iraq Wars.

War Is Not The Answer

General Wes Clark is the face of stopIranWar.com, a grassroots organization trying to head off a war against Iran. Where those who protested the Iraq War failed, this movement will succeed.

President Bush can't drum up enough political support for an invasion for Iran, even with the threat of Islam with the bomb. The country trusted him once on a mission to eradicate weapons of mass destruction and won't get fooled again.

Secondly, our all-volunteer military is stretched too thin to invade and occupy yet another country. Entering Iran would require reinstating the draft which is politically impossible.

To ignore both of those points, Bush would be setting himself up for some serious Shakespearean folly.

This was wired to a sign post in Washington Square Park. The "Iraq Out Now" statement sent me on an Internet search for catchy anti-war slogans. I found these gems:

Siphoning Iraq

I'm impressed that someone took the time not only to read this but also to leave a comment. This blog has yet to get a comment so I can imagine JJ's elation when his lone voice in the wilderness, printed on a mailing label and stuck to a pole, was heard.

Shut The War Down!

Did you hear anything on the news about this protest? Probably not, because the Troops Out Now Coalition went out of their way to make sure that most Americans would skip it.

The Iraq War is unpopular enough that a large number of people could show up to protest it, if that were the sole issue of the march.

But no, the organizers have to throw in "End the Occupations of Iraq, Palestine, Afghanistan", "Stop Threats Against Venezuela, Cuba, Iran, North Korea and Africa", "Stop the war on women & lesbian, gay, bi and trans people", "Stop the War Against the Black, Latin@, Arab & Muslim Communities", "Military Recruiters Out of Our Schools", "U.S. OUT of the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Haiti" along with other vague demands of how to spend our tax dollars.

See, you might get me to protest the continuation of the Iraq War, but I'm a strong believer in the occupation of Hawaii and Alaska so you won't catch me at any Troops Out Now Coalition events.
