Found at the Tea Lounge, Park Slope Brooklyn.
Art and advertising, from political protest to lost cats, collide on the streets of NYC in the form of flyers, wild posting and whatever else can be stuck to a lamp post or phone kiosk.
How lefty is this movement? On the back of the flyer is a list of organizations who endorse this march. Along with Queers for Peace & Justice and FIST - Fight Imperialism Stand Together is Millions for Mumia. The mention of Mumia's name is the tip-off that we're in far left field.
This is the Spanish side of a flyer calling for a May Day march. Left-wing revolutionaries always include a Spanish translation. It's part of the pose.
Of all of the statements on this poster, the one that is so left wing is "No Police I.C.E. Terror." I.C.E. stands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Only a super leftie would think that enforcing the laws that govern our borders is terror. Imagine their outrage that women have to stop at traffic lights. No justicia! No paz!
It's all a matter of perspective. While the right sees Hillary Clinton as a commie, the real commies don't think she's red enough. The commies are seeing this most clearly. Neither Clinton or Obama are going to start a revolution. What they can't see at all is that communism will never work.
I got this from a group of super lefties that are out in Union Square every weekend protesting Israel's treatment of the Palestinians.
The East Village is way more tolerant of stickers and flyers than the West Village. We'll see if this changes as the East Village becomes more gentrified. The dividing line is 4th Avenue where I took this photo.

This takes bumper sticker politics one step smaller. I found this four-and-a-quarter-inch demand on a subway exit in Long Island City.
Eventually most American holidays lose sight of their original intention. Labor Day was created to honor the working man but has been transformed into summer's last hurrah. Writing a poem to point this out is not much of a revelation.
It's true that the quest for cash motivates this country. That's capitalism, what the left-wing calls greed. And I'll go along with the notion that we as a nation have become too obsessed with wealth. Paris Hilton is the most stark example that we'll tolerate, even glamourize, any sort of behavior as long as it's associated with extreme sums of money. But this posting, wheatpasted in SoHo, is too shrill and cliche to be taken seriously, like saying that President Bush is a nazi. Having the words greed and feed form a cross - suggesting that Christianity and avarice are one in the same - is an extra layer of doctrine that's preaching to the Red Army Choir.
Mumia Abu-Jamal's is a case that has become a cause. I've seen this guy's face on flyers for as long as I've lived in New York.

This poem sounds like a spoof of a spoken word artist's first efforts. After writing this, the poet would address the issues of racism, capitalism, the police state and Mumia Abu-Jamal.
Some people work all their lives for their 15 minutes of fame and others have it thrust upon them while in a coma. I'm refering to Terri Schaivo who, at the time this was written, was enough of a media presence that only her first name was necessary.
I'm impressed that someone took the time not only to read this but also to leave a comment. This blog has yet to get a comment so I can imagine JJ's elation when his lone voice in the wilderness, printed on a mailing label and stuck to a pole, was heard.
